I quit my job... I am free

After graduating with my Master's Degree, I started working as a research associate in a local university.

Before I knew it, I have been working in the same position for seven years. If you have been working for quite a while, you may find yourself in a same predicament as myself.

Every morning, I have to drag myself out of my bed to go to work. When I reach work, I can easier spend one to two hours clearing emails, or doing some unproductive things before starting work. Yes, yes, there are jobs to be done and deadlines to be met... but I hardly have the enthusiasm that I used to have to do them. I will usually perk up when its time to knock off...

I start to appreciate the Chinese saying..."Like a worm at work. Like a dragon off work."

I ask myself why can't I spend more time with my wife and children instead of at work? Why can't I spend more time building a residual income rather than just depend on the source of income that stops when I stop working? Why can't I have the freedom to CHOOSE TO work rather than HAVE TO work?

In January 2007, I finally decided to quit my job. It was not an easy decision... Trust me... if you are the sole breadwinner in the household... it definitely is not an easy decision. My wife and I took a long time to finally pluck up enough courage for me to tender my resignation.

However, it is a decision that frees me. :)

It frees me and allows me the time to work on my source of residual income. A steady income that continues to pay me for my initial effort put in. Just like how an author is paid after writing a best-seller. Just like how a singer is paid after recording an evergreen song.

My resignation also frees me to spend time with my family members. I was able to be with my wife when she was admitted to the hospital for dehydration after throwing up non-stop when carrying our second child. I was able to be with her and not worry about exhausting my leave when she was doing confinement. I was able to help out at home when my little girl was having bronchitis and needs to be neubilised.

These are the things that make me happy. These are the things that make me free.
